Everyone knows David Koz and David Sanborn. They even know Marion Meadows and Eric Marienthal. But you have to hear Boney James. His funky flair to smooth jazz is second to none. "BACKBONE" was the first James disc I heard, and still remains my favorite. The title track starts the disc off with a funky/R&B/soul sound that gets you movin'. "JUST BETWEEN US" has some beautiful interplay where James plays both tenor and soprano, while "TRINADAD" gives a hint of an islands percussion sound. He also does a wonderful slow, short bluesy song titled simply "BLUE". The whole disc is full of wonderful "Smooth Jazz" sounds that exemplify James' wonderful talent. James has guest starred on some great artists' discs like Rick Braun, Peter White, and 3rd Force. His contemporaries know how good he is. Now you should, too! --
