He was one of the most productive and most versatile composers of all times. He enjoyed renown throughout Europe, from France to Russia and from Italy to England. He was elevated to the nobility, and his funeral ceremony was fit for royalty. But none of this could keep Peter von Winter from being quickly and thoroughly forgotten. Born in Mannheim, he received his musical formation in this residence city's court orchestra, it too known throughout Europe, but then spent most of his life in Munich after 1778. He was soon regarded as the Bavarian capital's most important musician and was honoured with prestigious compositional commissions. His work catalogue focusing on the opera also encompasses chamber music, orchestral works, and secular and sacred vocal music. Winter's music is unique not only in its universality and variety but also in the virtuosity with which he demonstrates his command of the compositional styles and expressive means of his times and blends them to form a new unity of individual stamp.
