The coloratura concerto is almost a parody of what Sutherland's detractors would cite as her shortcomings, swooping and mush- mouthed diction. On the other hand this concerto is an extended vocalise, so all those qualities are too the good here. You will look in vain for any truly memorably invention, charming though the work is. I would admit to a moment of true inspiration in the last movement of the Harp Concerto, but otherwise this is mostly droopy late-Romantic rep. Beautifully, impeccably performed and lushly recorded as we can always expect of Decca.
