Anna Murakawa, Brazilian violinist who has lived in Australia for four years. It was in the country where she earned her doctorate and where she intends to stay to pursue her career. The problem? Her visa was denied ... because she doesn't have enough social media followers! From Osasco city (Sao Paulo, Brazil), his story begins in 2003, at the age of 13, when he joined Projeto Guri at the encouragement of an uncle. She, who says she is very nerdy (her words!), Was curious about the possibility of learning to play an instrument: “[Choosing] the violin was the most challenging thing I did in my life. It's an instrument that you can't get a sound out of in the first few days and I found this challenge incredible. ” Since then, it has been 17 years of a lot of study and total dedication to practice and academia - his entry into this universe took place at the National Academy of Music, in Bulgaria, where he graduated. Then he did postgraduate studies at Violin Performance Carnegie, United States, followed with a master's degree at the University of Louisville, also in the USA, and, last qualification, with a doctorate at the University of Sidney, Australia - a whole trajectory tempered with specialization courses and deepening.
"I met a very famous violin teacher [in Sydney], with an impeccable reputation. I sent an email and asked if I could take the test and he said yes. I came without any guarantee, [with] borrowed money. I made the proof, I was accepted. Since I entered there was no person in the violin doctorate, and before that [it was years] that no other violinist had been accepted. So, there are years without any violinist in the course of the Sydney Conservatory, which is linked to the University of Sydney. It was an immense honor ”, he said. With a very hectic life, Anna divides her days between studies, classes and presentations (before the coronavirus pandemic, of course). Owner of an agency focused on musicians, Bravo Music Events, she still finds time to be an entrepreneur within the music community, creating bridges between artists and events. As it was written at the beginning of the text, Anna Murakawa gained fame on the Internet due to her problem with the Australian visa, which for the time being remains denied. His campaign on social networks to reverse the situation, however, has borne fruit: his Instagram has 556.000 followers. We asked what exactly happened and how this special visa works: "This visa is a very specific one, it is called a Distinguished Talent Visa. There are three basic requirements to achieve: you need to be an internationally recognized artist; you need to be proficient [fluent English]; you need to bring value to Australia. So it is very subjective, because each case is different. I know people who got this visa as tattoo artists, samba dancers, [through] jiu-jitsu. When there was a refusal, [they sent] a letter that basically said: 'Your career is very good, however, it is not measurable with the expectations of an international artist '. Now appeal. We will be able to come face to face with the judge to make this defense ”, she explains.
And she continues: "They kind of said that I had no way of proving in a tangible way that I am an artist. I am doing the possible and the impossible, asking for help humbly for people to share my page. I would love to know the number right of followers or a right way and need to measure my career, but I don’t have the number. 500 thousand can be enough, sometimes 1 million, 2 million, I don’t know. My lawyer says: the growth of followers in the networks is undoubtedly strong evidence that you are an above-average artist, a requirement determined in a decision by the Australian Federal Supreme Court (FCA) for this visa. So it is extremely important, until the day of the hearing, that I manage to improve my portfolio, attract more people, and also make more partnerships so that my work is recognized as an artist. After all, what does it mean to be successful as a musician? That is the question that hangs over Anna's case. In her defense, she says: "It's not that I'm making a career out of nothing. I've played with many artists internationally, in many countries, I've done shows with several people, from playing for the Pope to playing with Eminem, Michael Bublé, Ivete Sangalo, there are several, it is a career that already existed, but I did not have this recognition (on social networks).
