In search of simplicity and captivating melodies, Nikolai has created a personal style merging a wide array of influences. These reach from Rachmaninov to Hiromi, from Piazzolla to Theodosii Spassov and fuse to form an atmosphere often reminiscent of film music.
Born and raised in Vienna, Austria, he was exposed to music from an early age on. During his time in the Vienna Boys’ choir he received his first piano lesson and concurrently began composing short piano pieces. In the subsequent years he continued studying piano and voice, but was discouraged from studying composition due to the specific stylistic expectations at Vienna’s institutions.
At 21 he moved to San Francisco to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In the diverse environment of the Conservatory he explored his interest for jazz and ethnic music from various cultural regions while cultivating his artistic voice on the piano.
After graduating he lived and performed for one year in New York City and thereafter returned to Europe where he continues to expand his repertoire.
In November of 2020 he released his debut EP, M., which features 3 pieces for solo piano.
