The late Gary B.B. Coleman did a fair amount of blues and R&B producing at Ichiban in the 1980s and early '90s. One of the albums he produced for the Atlanta-based label was Caught in a Crossfire by Vernon Garrett, a little-known electric blues and soul singer. Coleman was definitely an appropriate man for the job -- B.B. King was a big influence on Garrett, and Coleman held King in such high regard that he named himself B.B. So Coleman and Garrett had a lot of common ground on 12-bar blues numbers like "If You Can't Help Me, Baby," "Drifting Apart," and "Bottom Line," as well as soul offerings (such as Denise LaSalle's "Love Me Right"). This isn't a remarkable album, but it's competent and likable. ~Alex Henderson
