Review by Scott Yanow
There is less joking around than usual on this live quintet session by altoist Richie Cole. Recorded at a Japanese concert, Cole (along with guitarist Bruce Forman, pianist Smith Dobson, bassist Marshall Hawkins and drummer Scott Morris) performs versions of his "Tokyo Rose Sings the Hollywood Blues" along with three bop standards ("Lady Bird," "I Can't Get Started" and "Cherokee") and the lengthy "Irish Folk Song" (which is a disguised original based on "I Got Rhythm" that finds him switching to tenor). This out-of-print LP is an excellent example of Richie Cole's talents at playing colorful bebop.
