The debut recording of Portland's Lower Monumental documents a live performance for Seattle's KEXP radio show "Sonarchy." Totally unrehearsed or preplanned, Lower Monumental's performances take jazz into unfamiliar ambient and picturesque territory. Aided by the subtle use of electronic effects and samplers, they explore texture and landscape implying a moody, free-jazz soundtrack. The musicians formed the core of "Flatland," a post-modern fusion group that recorded 2 albums and appeared with Herbie Hancock, Charlie Hunter, Galactic & Wayne Horvitz.
