The Tartit Group was invited as part of the third Voix de Femmes festival in 1995 in Liège. It was the first time that Tuareg music from Mali was performed in Europe. This group from the north of the country fled the repression of the Malian army and was formed in a Mauritanian refugee camp. The term “Tartit”, meaning “union” in Tuareg, symbolises the link between the members of the group and the two million Tuaregs who currently live in five different countries.

In the social-political chaos at the end of the previous century, the millennial poetry and music of this nomadic people served as beacons of their identity and collective memory. Whether festive or conducive to meditation, the music expresses the same desire to come together and recount the happiness, but also the suffering of a constantly uprooted people who continue to take pride in and are aware of their glorious past.
