The song was released on 18 May 2023 as the first single and opener to Minogue's sixteenth studio album Tension (2023) by BMG Rights Management and Minogue's company, Darenote. It was written by Norwegian singer-songwriter Ina Wroldsen and produced by Lostboy. Musically, "Padam Padam" is a dance-infused electronic song that uses the song's title as an onomatopoeia for the heartbeat.
"Padam Padam" received critical acclaim from music critics, many of whom praised the song's catchiness and ultimately felt it was a return to form for Minogue. "Padam Padam" is considered Minogue's biggest commercial single since the introduction of streaming services in record charts.
