Flat Duo Jets - Lucky Eye (1998)

Raised on the rockabilly standards of Eddie Cochrane and Dick Dale, the Flat Duo Jets bring these simple, stripped-down sounds from the streets of Chapel Hill to stages across the United States. Some of the 18 tracks on Lucky Eye are a bit repetitive and underdeveloped, with the lush addition of string and horn sections smacking against the duo's firm and established style but, taken as tribute to their musical heroes, the Flat Duo Jets do a respectable job, ranging in sound from Gene Vincent to George Thorogood. Combining instrumental pieces of varying consideration with hook-guided and occasionally narrative lyricisms on love, loneliness, and little children, the occassionally flat duo deals with blues, rock, surf, and country & western, along with some rich ballads and goofy improvisations. Though no one may ever bring back the golden age of rock & roll, it's good to know people are still trying.
