From the prolific community that is Ropeadope SUR comes a new project from Emilio Reyna, a forward-thinking jazz pianist who aims to push the possibilities of modern improvised music while maintaining a sense of sincerity and tradition. In high demand on the Mexico City Jazz scene, Reyna has collaborated with Jonathan Barber, Silvana Estrada, Yotam Ben Or, Minino Garay, Phil Grenadier, Gabriel Puentes, and Diego Franco. He describes his new album in this way:

Los Niños Perdidos (The Lost Kids) is rooted in the philosophical notion that human beings enter existence as tabula rasa, devoid of inherent programming. We’re born with a cognitive blank canvas, ready to be filled with the information, habits, fears, and memories from what we inevitably experience in our lives. Over the course of our childhood, our rational mind gradually takes control over our intuitive nature and little by little we become attached to these ideas, believing them to be who we are: our perceived identity. I believe it’s important to work to deconstruct this concept of self, to see things with an open mind, as if it were the first time, without the prejudices accumulated over the years. Part of my job as a musical improviser is learning to bring this mindset into the studio and the stage; to stay present and approach music with fresh ears and without judgment. The intention is to simply serve the music and leave the ego aside.
