The L.A. Four was a "fusion" group that worked quite well, mixing together cool jazz, sambas, bossa nova, and classical music. A large reason for the band's success was the sound of acoustic guitarist Laurindo Almeida, although co-leader Bud Shank (doubling on alto and flute) was responsible for many of the more heated moments. With bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton once again aboard, the band's sixth Concord release has an interesting variety of strong material. Highlights include Shank's title tune, "Little Boat," and "Secret Love." ~Scott Yanow
