With "Gramophonie" musician and sampling master Nicolas Repac explores the intricacies of jazz from the roaring twenties, taking us on an intimate journey, 20 years after his famous album "Swing Swing."

To mark its 20th anniversary, the label Nø Førmat! invited this long-time collaborator to revisit the nostalgic yet modernistic imagination of jazz from the roaring twenties, adding a new volume to his series of sound paintings (Black Box, Rhapsodic), imagining a sort of sequel to his album "Swing Swing," released in 2004.

Repac uses his samples with virtuosity and poetry, creating musical confessions in the form of waking dreams. While "Gramophonie" retains the playful and surreal spirit, especially in intoxicating tracks like "Harlem," "Scatastrophes," and "Swingphony," Nicolas Repac does not limit himself to merely revisiting the past. The rhythmically intoxicating tracks also blend piano, hybrid samples, vaporous and often cinematic. He significantly broadens his musical and emotional horizons, delving into the depths of intimacy and melancholy. The album carries an autobiographical dimension, with tracks like "Moulin bleu" and "Nuit noire Place Blanche," which evoke the Paris of yesteryear and its contemporary states of mind. The highlight of the album is undoubtedly the voice of Repac's mother singing "Pleure pas Nelly," adding a touch of raw and poignant emotion.
