Mo Dotti - opaque (2024)

How do you build up something new and fresh based on the previous works of the shoegaze/noise pop giants like My Bloody Valentine, Boo Radleys, Dinosaur Jr., and a few others?

The answer may lie with Los Angeles’ noise pop purveyors Mo Dotti lead by guitarist/vocalist Gina Negrini and their latest album Opaque.

Sure, the sound threads picked up from some of the above names are all over the album here, but Negrini and the band have that required touch to combine those sounds and make them their own. As Negrini explains, she wanted to start a group that sounded “like Cocteau Twins or Strawberry Switchblade, but also like My Bloody Valentine’s ‘Sunny Sundae Smile’.”

The key though here is the keen sense for a good melody, a great pop melody if you will that make the songs here so listenable and able to stand firmly on their own quality.

And yes, all that could be heard through the ten tracks here, but not only do Mo Dotti show enough inventiveness in their musical ideas but have obviously gained a detailed live experience to be able to transfer the excitement of playing this music live into excellent studio recordings that can rekindle the excitement of hearing this type of music for the first time.

What we get is a standout noisy dream pop, a veritable feat these days.
