The Mills Brothers - Saga Jazz: A Family Affair (2003)

It was by making instruments of their voices that the Mills Brothers acquired their popularity. Voice-trumpet, voice-double bass or voice-trombone, their vocal organs were capable of anything… and at the same time they put whole orchestras out of work. The success of the formula was not just anecdotal, because not only Ella Fitzgerald but also Louis Armstrong “scatted” alongside them, providing highly edifying testimony in this fraternal saga issuing from the “barbershop quartet” tradition. It didn’t stop it from often appearing at the top of the charts.
