Recorded at Milan's Ricordi Studios in 1977, Stairway to Heaven is entirely produced and arranged by Gian Piero Reverberi, who also performs on the album. A distinguished pianist, conductor, and composer of soundtracks and library music, Gian Piero Reverberi is the younger brother of influential composer and record producer Gianfranco.

For this album, Reverberi assembled a team of top-notch session musicians. These included drumming powerhouse Tullio De Piscopo, guitarist Ernesto Verardi (known for his work with Fabrizio De André and Oscar Rocchi’s Modern Sound/New Sound Quartet), and bassist Gigi Cappellotto (a frequent collaborator of Verardi and a key player on recordings by Bruno Lauzi, Ornella Vanoni, and Angelo Branduardi).

Featuring tracks with a captivating urban-funk groove ("Windy Wendy," "Escalation," "Bahia") alongside symphonic easy-listening takes on rock classics (like the title track), and smooth, sensual ballads ("Innervoice," "Angel Drops"), Stairway to Heaven is vibrant instrumental music that seems perfectly made to accompany images but is also exquisitely enjoyable on its own.
