“Après le déluge” is the first poem in Arthur Rimbaud's posthumous collection Les Illuminations. The text evokes a world coming back to life after the shock of catastrophe. Yet at the end of the text, Rimbaud invokes a new deluge, as a necessity for the cycle to close again. Some see this as a salvific call to revolution, after the bloody and abortive attempt of the Paris Commune. Les Enfants d'Icare's music, though instrumental until now, has always had a narrative thread, sometimes hidden, sometimes obvious, if only through the titles of Boris Lamérand's compositions. In this new opus, the desire is to speak out, because the need to express certain truths is felt, after the deluge the world has been through since March 2020... The writing task here is not to “set Rimbaud's Illuminations to music”, but to draw from it the strength to express a music that will unfold in counterpoint to the text. It's not a question of making songs out of these texts, but of using the natural music of the words to extract original music from them. The text will sometimes be spoken, sometimes chanted, sometimes sung. This 2nd opus will be an opportunity for the string quartet to collaborate with the human voice.
