Charles Nicholson (1795-1837) was one of the most important figures in the evolution of the flute. He was England’s first ever concert flautist, flautist to the king, and made significant contributions to flute design through ‘Nicholson’s “Improved” Flute’.

Martyn Shaw celebrates Nicholson’s bold, dynamic style through a recording upon the instrument that inspired the modern flute. Such was Nicholson’s reputation for dynamic virtuosity in his playing that the term ‘Nicholsonian effect’ was coined.
