The Bluebird Recordings 1934-1938 is the best CD retrospective yet assembled of Jazz Gillum's peak years, offering 22 tracks -- including such songs as "Early in the Morning," "Don't Scandalize My Name," "Alberta Blues," "Just Like Jessie James," "Reefer Head Woman," "Worried and Bothered" and "Good Old 51 Highway" -- that find him at his easygoing best. Document's multi-volume series may be a more complete overview of his works, but this remains the best summation of his strengths and talents. © Thom Owens
