Tied&Tickled Trios current album “Electric Avenue Tapes” is one of the most creative and original fusions of acoustic improvisation and electronica based arrangements that I’ve heard in a long time. This is not an album where people blow over beats, but one where the basic jazz trio format (sax/bass/drums) is given a novel inflection by an expressive yet ultimately economic use of programming. This is a record with a constantly shifting stylistic centre: it ambles languorously from parched gritty electronica where fragmented melodies create hazy afterglow to sprightly soulful dance tunes tastefully seasoned by subtle Afro Asian rhythmic pulses. This is by no means immediate music but more than rewards repeated listening. A lot of people do it the other way around these days.
