This is a reissue of Danny Thompson's debut solo album, originally released in 1987. Named after his touring band at the time, Whatever, it features Thompson on his trademark double bass, reedman Tony Roberts on all manner of saxes, flutes and clarinets, and guitar from Bernie Holland. While one could probably strike up a debate as to whether this is jazz or folk, it falls well within the territory that Thompson's previous band, Pentangle, explored in the late 1960s, albeit without the twin modal guitars of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, and without the vocals. If it's folk, it's done with a distinct jazz approach, and if it's jazz, well, it falls on the folk side of the tree. Whatever Whatever is, it's charming, subdued, and brief. Highlights include the atmospheric "Till Minnie Av Jan," the very Pentangle-like "Swedish Dance," and "Lament for Alex." Thompson fans won't be disappointed, although Pentangle fans might be, if they're expecting Pentangle Two.~Whatever Review by Steve Leggett
