Most people are probably familiar with the saying “If you love someone, set them free; if they come back to you, it was meant to be.” Well, that’s the case with NJ poppers Somerdale, who, after 18 years, are back where they started (on the Kool Kat label) delivering their first full-length of all new music in 7 years! We “discovered” the trio in the early 00’s when they existed as The Shags (they released an EP). After changing their name (same lineup) to Somerdale, they released their debut full-length, “Friday Nite In America”, on Kool Kat in 2005. They went on to record for Zip Records, The FDR label and JEM Records before returning “home” with “Let’s Get Started”. Their music has been described as “cleverly combining the introspective songwriting of Badfinger, the frenetic energy of The Who, the gorgeous harmonies of The Beatles and the quirky playfulness of Fountains of Wayne, and ends up with what you might expect - a very fun, very catchy, slices of well-crafted 70s-tinged pop music” - and it’s true! Never ones to rush the recording process, the band releases their music when they feel it’s ready. And, with that type of quality control, it’s always worth the wait.
The Who-like title track sets the tone for what is a hook ‘n harmony-filled ride! “Their music is stunning exercises of precision pop perfection. You want good pop – that’s one thing. You want great pop? There are never so-so moments; it’s all meat and potatoes – no filler. There’s something about how New Jersey still manages to produce top notch pop-oriented bands with both the talent and skill to write and deliver amazing songs that you immediately take in. And Somerdale definitely is in that upper echelon.”
