Smote's music, featured in their fifth release for Rocket Recordings, Songs From The Free House, is characterized as a deep descent into roots, vibrations, and repetition, crafting monumental sound with mantric intensity. Following the precedent set by their 2024 album A Grand Stream and powerful live shows, Smote has established a reputation for creating visionary soundscapes akin to amplified ritual. The new album offers five gnostic incantations that expand their approach. Core member Daniel Foggin handles most of the instrumentation and vocals, but the recording at Blank Studios with Sam Grant and contributions from Sally Mason (vocals) and Ian Lynch (Uilleann pipes) brought more breadth and depth. This release is an auditory work that effectively blurs the boundaries between ancient and modern, primal and eternal, becoming an audial monument passed down like tradition.
