"Oceans Apart" is the ninth and final studio album by the Australian indie rock band The Go-Betweens, released on May 3, 2005. The album's ten tracks were written by the group's founders, Grant McLennan and Robert Forster. Recording took place in London (Good Luck Studios) from November 2004 to January 2005, with the exception of the track "Boundary Rider," which was recorded in Brisbane. Mark Wallis served as the producer. The band aimed to recapture the London energy in contrast to their more subdued previous works. The album won the ARIA Music Awards 2005 in the "Adult Contemporary Album" category. Thematically, it covers youthful memories, romantic relationships, and middle-age experiences, including references to a train ride to Frankfurt and the Sydney art scene of the 1980s. The album's sound is characterized as "urban sonic architecture" with rich, multi-layered textures, incorporating jazzy horns, electronic elements, and acoustic and electric guitars. "Oceans Apart" received high critical acclaim, as indicated by its 85/100 rating on Metacritic.
