Trinity, the third collaborative album by Lawrence English and Stephen Vitiello, advances their experimental musical explorations by incorporating a unique collaborator—one per track—into each of the five pieces. This "surprise" element, according to English, allowed the duo to map new musical territories. Featured artists working at the edges of sound and genre include Chris Abrahams (The Necks), Marina Rosenfeld, Brendan Canty (Fugazi), and Aki Onda, as well as the late Steve Roden, whose contribution to the final track is credited as "mystery sounds." The album deepens the music's immediacy, pushing it in unforeseen directions. For example, in the opener "With Chris," Abrahams' piano initially floats above the soundbed before moving underneath it. In "With Brendan," Canty's percussion teeters on the edge of disintegration, mixed amidst soft drones. English and Vitiello, who work remotely and have a history of playful experimentation using modular synthesis and field recordings, plunge the listener into dynamic, enigmatic, and spacious sound worlds, inviting them to lean in close to the mystery.
