Shay Hazan - When It Rains It Pours (2025) [Hi-Res]

Bassist, composer, and producer Shay Hazan has released his third solo album, ‘When It Rains It Pours,’ marking a significant stylistic shift. Hazan moves away from the guimbri-led sound that established his reputation (following ‘Reclusive Ritual’ and ‘Wusul’) toward a broader palette dominated by bass, guitar, and synthesizers. The album reflects his evolution as a multi-instrumentalist and studio craftsman, deepening his exploration of layered grooves, spiritual melodies, and experimental textures. The title is tied to a period of personal and physical challenges, during which joint issues forced Hazan to rediscover the electric bass. Key tracks include “Kolot,” built around the wordless but resonant vocals of Ethiopian saxophonist Abate Berihune; “4-8,” a propulsive Afrobeat framework with Middle Eastern inflections, nodding to Fela Kuti; and “Embrace,” a meditative, vulnerable composition featuring Hazan's own vocals. Influenced by Malawian musician Gasper Nali and drummer Hamid Drake, the album merges the immediacy of live ensemble playing (featuring Eyal Netzer, Roy Zuzovsky, and Shahar Haziza) with intensive sampling and studio techniques. ‘When It Rains It Pours’ firmly positions Hazan among today's most adventurous voices in spiritual jazz and beyond.
