Dan Weiss - Sixteen: Drummers Suite (2016)

Dan Weiss presents Sixteen: Drummers Suite, an expansive sequel to his previous project, Fourteen. The recording features an ensemble of sixteen musicians utilizing a wide array of instruments, ranging from a standard jazz rhythm section to harp, glockenspiel, and tabla. Musically, the album fuses elements of jazz, Indian classical music, progressive rock, and contemporary classical music, while also drawing inspiration from composers Iannis Xenakis and Per Nørgård.

The conceptual framework of the suite relies on rhythmic transcriptions of legendary jazz drummers: Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Tony Williams, Philly Joe Jones, Kenny Clarke, and Ed Blackwell. Weiss utilized specific fragments of their solos and accompaniment not merely as rhythmic patterns, but as the foundation for constructing full orchestral compositions that reflect the style and personality of each master.
