Born out of the fertile Copenhagen jazz scene, Omrum is a new collective quartet whose music moves freely between composition and improvisation, atmosphere and intensity. Their debut album captures four distinctive voices on the Scandinavian Jazz scene meeting as equals in a space where trust, surrender, and shared vision guide every note.
Bringer of Light is set for release on November 13th, 2025 via Hobby Horse Records.
The word “Omrum” doesn’t technically exist, but it reflects the sense of “space” the group embodies – both the physical space surrounding them, and the sonic worlds they create together.
Trumpeter Erik Kimestad, trombonist Mads Hyhne, bassist Richard Andersson, and drummer Jakob Høyer each bring decades of experience across Scandinavian jazz and beyond. In Omrum, there is no front figure and no hierarchy: only the freedom to contribute and respond in the moment.
Recorded over a winter weekend on the Danish island of Møn, the record was captured at John Fomsgaard’s Karmacrew Studio, a renovated barn warmed by a wood-burning stove. The four musicians recorded live in a single room without headphones, enhancing the immediacy of their interplay. If you listen closely, the crackle of the fire remains on tape – a subtle reminder of the intimacy of the session.
The album’s ten tracks include six compositions by Kimestad, one by Hyhne, and three collective improvisations. Shaped by open forms, sudden bursts of virtuosity, and quiet explorations of texture, the music embraces risk and celebrates surrender. “I place my fate in their hands and vice versa,” Kimestad reflects. “Together we embrace our destiny, with music as the medium.”
Each member of Omrum is a distinctive voice in Nordic jazz: Kimestad has become a sought-after collaborator in Kresten Osgood Kvartet and Horse Orchestra; Hyhne’s resume spans projects from Bugpowder to Maria Faust Sacrum Facere; Andersson has worked with Jeff “Tain” Watts, Tony Malaby, and Oskar Gudjonsson; and Høyer is known both for his role in The Raveonettes and as part of Jakob Bro’s trio.Bringer of Light distills years of musical kinship into a single recorded statement, a debut that radiates intimacy, trust, and a shared commitment to exploring the unknown.
