Macama Jonda is the audio document of José Heredia Maya's theatrical production, released on the Ariola label in 1983. It stands as the first fusion recording to bring together flamenco and the Arab-Andalusian musical tradition on equal footing. The album's narrative centres on the love and marriage of a Christian Andalusian man and a Muslim woman from Tetouan, Morocco — a story that transforms personal romance into a manifesto of intercultural reconciliation, five centuries after the Reconquista.
The musical fabric is woven from two equally weighted traditions: the Orchestra of Andalusian Music from Tetouan, led by Abdessadaq Chekara, contributes rebab, lute, violin, and percussion, while the Spanish side is represented by flamenco guitarists Pedro "El Niño de Jero", Paco Cortés, and Miguel Ochando. The cantaores — Luis Heredia "El Polaco", Antonia "La Negra", Jaime Heredia "El Parrón", and Enrique Morente — interweave with Moroccan vocal lines across nine tracks spanning serrana, bulerías, romance, tangos, and tarara, each arranged as an organic synthesis of both cultures.
The album was a work ahead of its time: it anticipated, by two decades, what would later be called the "Alliance of Civilisations." Producer Fernando Miranda and engineers Peter McNamee and Enrique Rielo captured the warmth of the theatrical staging in studio conditions. The original LP came with a double-sided insert: Maya's own prose text in Spanish on one side, song lyrics on the other.
