Born into a sharecropping family in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and relocating to Detroit in 1943, John Lee Hooker forged a singular style built on hypnotic one-chord grooves that fused the regional sounds of the Delta, Detroit, and Chicago.
The program spans the most significant stretch of his career — from the late-1940s Detroit breakthrough ("Boogie Chillun," "Hobo Blues," "Crawling King Snake," "Sally Mae") through the early-1950s Chess sessions ("Mad Man Blues," "Worried Life Blues," "Just Me and My Telephone") to the Vee-Jay-era classics ("Dimples," "I'm in the Mood," "No Shoes") and the signature 1962 hit "Boom Boom," inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016. His debut recording, "Boogie Chillen" (1948), helped lay the foundation for rock and roll, while his driving rhythm and rich baritone influenced bands such as the Rolling Stones.
