"Springtime" is the fifth studio album by the American duo Freakwater, released in January 1998 on the independent Chicago label Thrill Jockey Records.
The album cemented the band's status as one of the most uncompromising, honest, and influential acts in the nascent alternative country scene of the 1990s.
Freakwater is the core of the singer-songwriter duo Catherine Irwin and Janet Bean (also a member of the indie rock band Eleventh Dream Day). Their work has always veered far from the glossy, commercial pop-country of Nashville. Instead, they draw on the gritty, dark traditions of Old-Time Americana and Appalachian folk, filtering them through the prism of an independent punk consciousness.
