The 1971 debut album by the Peruvian band Black Sugar stands as a pinnacle of South American Latin funk, recorded despite the suppressive political climate of a military regime. Under the guidance of jazz pianist and arranger Jaime Delgado Aparicio, the musicians fused the influence of American brass rock (Chicago, Tower of Power) with Afro-Cuban percussion, jazz piano, and psychedelic guitar.
