Os Mutantes - Ao Vivo (1976)

"Ao Vivo" is the first official live album by the legendary Brazilian band Os Mutantes, released in 1976 on the Som Livre label.

The album was recorded during a series of concerts at the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro in August 1976. This release documented the final phase of the band's existence before its disbandment in 1978.

By the time of the concert recording, the band's lineup had completely changed. Joining Sérgio Dias on stage were keyboardist Luciano Alves, bassist Paulo de Castro, and drummer Rui Motta. The musicians emphasized virtuosic, expansive instrumental parts, cosmic passages of analog synthesizers, and complex rhythmic transitions.

The album consists primarily of new material the band had been testing live, along with songs from their then-latest studio album, "Tudo Foi Caso Perdido" (recorded in 1974 under the moniker O A Block but released later). The album's centerpiece is large-scale, multi-movement compositions, such as the ten-minute suite "Sagitárius." Echoes of the band's Brazilian roots are subtle, buried beneath dense layers of guitar fuzz and keyboard passages.

"Ao Vivo" became an important document of the Brazilian prog rock era of the 1970s, demonstrating that Mutantes were able to become part of the global progressive movement, albeit at the cost of completely changing their original course.
