Reissue of the debut by A.G. Cook & Danny L Harle’s earliest duo, Dux Content, initially dispensed on Gamsonite, a predecessor of P.C. Music, and teasing out strands of makina, electro-house, bardcore and trap with combo’s of ludic, recombinant suss & sharp sound design that became their calling card.
Scrolling back to what now feels like a distant world - the up-for-grabs edges of early 2010s - ‘Lifestyle’ maps out formative aspects of the two producers, still relatively fresh from music studies at Goldsmiths, and making their mark in a burgeoning “internet music” scene. Of course they’re both now chart-topping songwriters/producers with credits for Charli xcx, Dua Lipa, Oklou, et al, but here they’re positively bubbling over with wild, yet disciplined, fusions of upfront hard dance with jazz, contemporary classical and pop that, with the benefit of hindsight, place them in a contemporaneous cultural slipstream with likes of Cracksmurf/T C F or James Ferraro, and soon-to-be spar, SOPHIE.
‘Lifestyle’ is the sound of two minds scything thru cultures and sounds they grew up with - Harle coming from a family background spanning his Geordie dad, John Harle’s BBC scores and early taste for makina’s stacked melodies - and bonding over a shared love of Captain Beefheart, Archie Sheep, and Tim & Eric, all evident in their grasp of shiny, commercial hooks and complex rhythm wrapped up with daft grin and wink. Shake a wand anywhere and you’ll hit a mad one, from the crazed midi piano house of ‘Voice of an Angel’, thru the jazz-fink of ‘City Break’ and ‘Hero Next Door’, free wheeling jazz trance of ‘Heart of Death’ and pitch bent panpipes of ‘Business Class’.
