Transylvanian Recordings, the indefatigable Oakland label behind much of California's ugly, doom-leaning output, releases Field of Fear and Scorpion, an album that pulls listeners in with feral doom force and holds them through a wide array of styles. The opening track stays deceptively gentle and ethereal for a long stretch before erupting into an apocalyptic post-metal crash-and-burn close. That weight carries into Black Beating Heart, the first track with vocals, where a clear Neurosis influence is paired with a sludgy ugliness and a droning ethos that sits oddly against the songs' short lengths.

From there the record shifts direction. Hell on Wheels moves from Nick Cave-style country blues into a pained Swans-like sound, while The Final Horseman stays melancholic despite its enchanting rhythms and atmosphere. The closing A Prayer starts near silence before building into ominous, weighty, threatening tones, its marching rhythm and cold repetition giving it an almost industrial edge.

Subtle stylistic twists run throughout, marking a band restless within its own sound and eager to stand out. On Scorpion, they succeed — an album that reveals new details with every repeat listen.
