ABBA’s only overseas chart-topping record turns half a century

“Dancing Queen” was released as a single in Sweden on August 15, 1976, and a few days later in the UK and the rest of Europe. It was a huge success worldwide, from New Zealand to the then Soviet Union.

“Dancing Queen” was included on ABBA’s 1976 studio album “Arrival”. The lyrics were written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, and Andersson and Ulvaeus also produced the track.

ABBA’s hit “Dancing Queen” is one of the best-known and most successful songs from their 1976 album Arrival, and it became an instant worldwide success – the recording, which evokes the distinctive sound of the 1970s disco era, is still considered one of the most popular disco anthems.

"Dancing Queen" is the only ABBA song to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, West Germany, and the Soviet Union, and was in the top five in several other countries.

Along with many other ABBA hits, "Dancing Queen" has helped establish the band as one of the most influential groups in the history of pop music. The song is often cited as one of the greatest pop songs of the 20th century, and a defining piece of ABBA's musical legacy.
