Mats Erlandsson & Gus Loxbo - Minnets Långa Kedjor (2026) [Hi-Res]

Swedish musician Mats Erlandsson, a veteran of XKatedral, returns two years after Gyttjans Topografi (2023) with a new work, this time alongside bassist and improviser Gus Loxbo. They have been friends for years, since before either had settled into his recognisable sound, yet this is their first proper collaborative album. Its sound rests entirely on mutual trust and close familiarity. Timing matters most: at first little happens, and the music is built from motion, pauses and the ability to listen to each other. Loxbo’s distorted, doomy drones give weight to Erlandsson’s lofty compositions. Maria W Horn narrates, and Daniel M Karlsson adds bells and accents. On the lengthy Trollkarlsklint, the bass first produces scratchy, textured sounds, then its range expands and the music slides from folk to doom metal. Häng blommor om halsen is much quieter: Erlandsson plays long, sustained guitar tones while Loxbo’s bass rumbles murmur in the distance like snores. On Hur långt har du kvar att gå?, Karlsson fleshes out Erlandsson’s zither chimes with a set of bells before Loxbo cuts in with sub-heavy dirt on the scale of Sunn O))).
