The third and final full-length double album by the co-founders of Elephant 6 Recording Co. The first album in 27 years from the band from Athens, Georgia.

Being a legend is a heavy burden. It has been 27 years since The Olivia Tremor Control’s last album. During that time, they’ve influenced countless bands, been the subject of documentaries and biographies, and now—as unlikely as it seemed—there’s finally a third album from The Olivia Tremor Control. In the 1990s, The Olivia Tremor Control released two albums of brilliant experimental and psychedelic pop: “Music from the Unrealized Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle“ (1996) and “Black Foliage: Animation Music Vol. 1“ (1999).

As founding members of the Elephant-6 collective, they redefined the U.S. underground scene, bringing vibrant paisley colors and sonic adventures to a scene characterized by dark irony and a fear of pretension. Work on the album began as early as 2005, but other projects and commitments slowed progress. In 2010, the band—consisting of Hart, Doss, John Fernandes, Pete Erchick, Eric Harris, and Derek Almstead—began recording. By 2011, The Olivia Tremor Control had reestablished itself as a fully active band and had added AJ Griffin as well as touring members Scott Spillane and Robbie Cucchario to the lineup. The band was now recording nonstop and well on its way to completing the album. Then, in the summer of 2012, Bill Doss died suddenly and tragically. With everyone still in shock and mourning, work on “The Same Place” came to a standstill.

Every attempt to resume the project failed until 2023, when producer and musician Jason NeSmith from Athens—after watching the Elephant-6 documentary—came on board to help. In 2024, when the album was nearly finished, Will Hart passed away unexpectedly. Based on Will’s extensive collection of notes, “The Same Place” was finally completed by the surviving band members, the entire Elephant-6 community, and producers Derek Almstead, Jason NeSmith, and Ron Kwasman. “The Same Place” brings together everything The Olivia Tremor Control ever did well. It even takes it a step further and goes beyond what anyone could have imagined.
