Ronald Merrills, otherwise known as Judah Eskender Tafari, will always be remembered for his captivating melodic voice and as a member and one of its’ top vocalists of the orthodox faith, The Twelve Tribes of Israel.
As a youth growing up in Jamaica, he enjoyed listening to music by artists like Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, Bob Marley, John Holt, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, and Stevie Wonder, to name a few, and slowly started to learn playing the guitar. Driven by his musical craft, he soon sang harmony and background vocals with a group called Captive Lions. His first studio work from the late 70s included a number of singles for the legendary Studio One. Later on, he teamed up with one of Jamaica’s leading reggae bands of that era called the Generation Gap Band and played rhythm and bass guitar as well as vocals. In the 90s and early 2000s he was mostly working with Gussie P and the Sip A Cup label, whereas the late 2000s saw a number of releases with Ras Kush and Black Redemption. In recent years his works can be found on a vast number of labels from all over the world, including many of the top producers of our time.
His music delivers a positive message of faith and hope and will never loose its relevance.
