Jelle Dittmar - De Schooltuin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2020)

The score has three major components: music for the characters, music for tension, and music for a dramatic reveal midway through that pivots the two halves of the storyline into something unexpected. Each of the three characters are represented by their own musical theme designed to work with the other two, integrating the characters and their connections musically as they progress through the story. Leroy crafted the score’s more suspenseful elements with an acoustic and synthetic textural palette, using a lot of bowed textures — sliding a violin bow across a dulcimer’s strings, or the surface of a cymbal or a drum. “A lot of it came from layering that out,” said Leroy. “We end up having this really rich and emotional sound from the live strings supplemented by the screechy and raw quality of the bowed instruments, which builds tension.”
Leroy regards his score for Chi Chi Em Em as a classical orchestral thriller score. It combines electronic elements with a variety of synthetic textures, but also has a substantial acoustic orchestral component. “The film starts with a few solemn chordsplayed by the orchestra, similar to an overture for a symphony or an opera, before it quickly morphs into a modern type of aesthetic,” Leroy explained. “The further we go into the story,the more the classical elements start coming back out, and once they are presented in their full glory, it feels natural based on what we’ve heard at the very beginning.”
