Daryl Groetsch - Frozen Waste (2023)

Frozen Waste lives up to its title as its even more minimal spreads of sound evoke a journey through the endless expanse of an icy tundra buffeted by harsh winds, offering respite only in deserted caves that dot the landscape. Deeply resonant synth tones float over cavernous bass notes, as Groetsch tempers the parameters of each voice to fluctuate at barely perceptible rates. His microtonal, texture-focused electronics remain in an alien liminal space, not quite eerie in nature but never wholly comfortable, making the moments all the more affecting when legible arpeggios pop through the haze as shelter from the cold.
