Samuel Reinhard - Movement (2024) [Hi-Res]

New York-based composer Samuel Reinhard enlists Leila Bordreuil, John Also Bennet, pedal harpist Shelley Burgon, saxophonist Michal Biel and bassist Vincent Yuen Ruiz to assist on 'Movement', an investigation of duration and perception that's build from softly held notes. You'll have to turn this up a bit. Reinhard layers his instrumental sounds carefully, but purposefully, bringing out their most disarming textures and cadences in the process. He's most intrigued by the breath of instrumentation, so fixates on the quiet, not the bombast of each instrument. His own piano parts are stripped of their sharp attack, turned into syrupy echoes, while Bordreuil's cello becomes a faint scrape in the distance and Burgon's pedal harp provides additional tonal support. It's the construction itself that's most captivating; the instrumentation is arranged from fragments that trigger according to a predetermined system, so the repetition and rhythm creates a dizzying, lulling effect that's hard to resist.
