Laura Cannell - AURORAE (2026) [Hi-Res]

Laura Cannell embraces medieval modes, playing organ pipes, raw strings and synths to make an ancient and modern set of minimalist drone tracks to bathe in.

Following on from The Medieval Drone Society I & II, released in January and February 2026 and both placing in The Official UK Album download charts, Cannell is back with a stepping stone between ancient and modern worlds.

Improvising and exploring the sounds of a ramshackle church pipe organ, alongside soft synths, cello and fiddle, the new release AURORAE is a cousin to the medieval drone society, inspired by ancient modes, textures and now blurring the acoustic and electronic instruments to create slow music to invoke the magical light of the Southern and Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis.

On a windy March day with wooden doors rattling and iron gates clanging, Laura stepped into a solitary church built by 11th century Norman settlers, and let the pipe organ exhale and wheeze it’s raspy song. Drones and melodies were improvised in this daylight flooded church, with more improvisations added at her home studio on strings and synths.
