This album was made for my grandmother, Mary Helen Mraz-Fowler, known to me as Nanny Razz. She couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket, but she enjoyed hearing her favorite music performed every Saturday night at the Gospel Chicken House.
Nanny Razz was a kind and inclusive woman, a jokester, and an amazing cook. She was always supportive of the arts and made just a few notable and quotable requests of me: “finish your okra” and “make me a gospel album.”
So, as a Christmas present for my grandma, I recorded this collection of inspirational songs, handpicked from her personal favorites, along with titles found in the piano bench of my other grandma, Virginia Waller Mundy Powell. Recorded in a style inspired by classic country, bluegrass, gospel television and radio of their era, this collection became a part of Nanny Razz’s daily life until she went beyond the sunset. It was her wish that I would share this album with listeners who love music rooted in faith, comfort, and a little comedy.
This is what my grandma always wanted. And I hope you enjoy this album as much as she did. I personally think it goes down easier than okra.
