Pianist and composer Andy Milne is releasing the original motion picture soundtrack for "True North," a documentary directed by Michèle Stephenson that explores the Black liberation movement in Montréal. The score for the film, which premiered at TIFF, transcends traditional genres by blending elements of 1960s jazz, psychedelic blues-rock, avant-garde saxophone, and neoclassical piano. In creating the soundtrack, Milne utilized musical collaging and collaborated closely with sound design to achieve an immersive sense of fragmented nostalgia. Experimental improvisations by saxophonist Michael Attias played a pivotal role in conveying revolutionary tension. This release marks a significant milestone in Milne's career, as he increasingly balances his jazz legacy with large-scale classical and choral commissions.
