In Renaissance Spain, the villancico was born as a song in the vernacular, deeply rooted in popular culture. Gradually, this genre crossed the threshold of the sacred to become part of religious celebrations, especially those of Christmas and Epiphany. Performed in cathedrals, villancicos became the reflection of a vibrant and sincere collective fervor, comparable to devotional statues or hagiographic narratives that nourished the faith of the people. This record invites us on a true musical journey through the spiritual songs and villancicos composed by Francisco GUERRERO (1528-1599) following his pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Throughout this perilous journey, marked by the discovery of the holy sites of Christ's life, the composer drew deep inspiration, giving birth to works imbued with emotion, tenderness, and intense humanity. BIO EXPRESS: For over fifteen years, French mezzo-soprano Anna Reinhold has traced a rich path alongside the greatest conductors, guided by an insatiable curiosity, a taste for challenge, and a quest for freedom through music, with a predilection for the Baroque repertoire. At her side, Argentine lutenist and guitarist Quito Gato stands out for his spirit of research and talent, nurtured by numerous prestigious collaborations in Europe. Their meeting in 2013 at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence marked the beginning of a deep artistic partnership. Together, they explore new musical horizons, culminating in the project El jardín del Cielo, where their shared sensibility brings Guerrero's spiritual universe to life with accuracy and simplicity.
