With the October 1980 release of Take Me Back on MCA Records, American vocalist Brenda Lee solidified her commercial resurgence within the country music landscape. Recorded during the summer of 1980 across Sound Stage Studios, Creative Workshop, and Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, the ten-track collection features material from high-profile songwriters. Elton John and Gary Osborne penned the title track, Kim Carnes contributed "What Am I Gonna Do", and the lead single "Broken Trust" featured guest vocals from the prominent country vocal group The Oak Ridge Boys.

Take Me Back marked Brenda Lee's return to the Billboard Top Country Albums chart for the first time since 1976, peaking at number 30, while "Broken Trust" reached the top ten on the Hot Country Songs chart. Music journalists praised the release for its tasteful string arrangements, delicate keyboard work, and the timeless power of the singer's vocal performance.
