The young Korean pianist William Youn is a very special lyrical talent, a genuine poet“ (Attila Csampai), whose calm lyrical pondering develops an lavish life of its own, completely unforced, with sovereign, bravura technique of touch and attack“ (Marco Frei). Youn initially began his career in the USA and Asia, and for several years he has also been developing his presence in Europe.

Late last year, part of Mozart’s manuscript of the Sonata, K. 331 was found in Budapest. The manuscript, with the exception of the last page of the last movement, Rondo alla turca, had so far been considered missing under mysterious circumstances. The new Urtext, according to the pianist’s statement, not only contains alterations in the phrase markings, articulation, rhythm and dynamics, but there are some different notes as well. The opening of the second movement is particularly interesting for William Youn: “With the new phrase indication and new note (A instead of Csharp) in the third bar, I play the entire phrase with a completely different agogic quality, which lends it a different character as well. Bars 24–26 of the same movement have always been played in the minor key up until now – and they are now suddenly in major!”

Hardly anything more can be added to this verdict by Marco Frei in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung of 6 May 2016 – except perhaps that this is a fantastic fourth issue and the recordings for Volume 5 are scheduled to be made in Munich this coming December.

At the beginning of his Mozart cycle with Oehms Classics and the Bavarian Broadcasting Company, William Youn stated in an interview: 'I would like to play a Mozart that can be sensed and felt. After all, many say that Mozart always sounds the same, but I don’t feel that way. I would like to show how differentiated and exciting Mozart can describe the most varied emotions and colours of people –through music'. When one has heard all 5 CDs, there is actually nothing more to add to that. His plan has been wonderfully realised.
